Guided tour of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, State Square, Darwin
Daily during Law Week (11 - 15 May 2009), 10.00am – 11.00am
Take a tour of some of the 11 courtrooms and other items of interest in the tropically designed Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. The tour will begin with a viewing of the spectacular Venetian glass floor mosaic based on the painting ‘Milky Way Dreaming’ by Nora Napaltjari Nelson and several additional artworks of significance will also be narrated. Meet your tour guide inside the entrance of the Court.

Law Week Launch and Tug-of-Law

His Honour, The Administrator, Mr Tom Pauling QC will officially launch Law Week 2009 and the 4th Edition Northern Territory Law Handbook Darwin launch at a BBQ lunch in Smith Street Mall. The ‘One Mob’ Dancers will make a special appearance, and the lawyers Tug-of-War competition will return the by popular demand

Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 May, 8.45am – 2.30pm - Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, State Square, Darwin.
This year’s Schools Legal Forum will include a talk about the responsibilities of being a jury member, followed by a tour of the Supreme Court; a Graduate Law Clerk will speak about why she chose law as a profession and her transition from university to the work force. The highlight of the day will be talks by Rex Wild QC and Matthew Nathan regarding the roles of defence and prosecution lawyers, followed by a mock trial.

In a world first, the Northern Territory Government has legislated for reporting of domestic violence to become mandatory. The law is designed to protect women and children from family violence. It requires all adults to report domestic violence if they believe another person’s life is in danger or they believe a person has caused, or is about to cause, serious harm to another person in a domestic relationship. This seminar will explain obligations and rights are in clear terms.
Movie by Moonlight “To Kill a Mocking Bird”

Bring the family, a rug, a picnic and something to drink and enjoy the multiple Oscar winning screen play version of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill a Mocking Bird. Renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with serious issues of rape and racial inequality, the key character Atticus Finch, played by Gregory Peck, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. Lee and Peck shared a friendship long after the movie was made and Peck's grandson was named "Harper" in her honour.
